Words Within Words Lesson Plan KS1


There are two words within words lesson plans below. One for using with interactive whiteboards and the other for using with iPads or individual computers. Both are perfect for using with KS1 learners.

Interactive Whiteboard Lesson

Overview

The following points provide a quick overview of the using this words within words lesson plan with Lucy’s reading game.

Context of Lesson

To find a new word within a given word, then clicking and dragging letters to make the new word

Resources Required

This words within words lesson plan requires the following resources. Words within words game, interactive whiteboard, small individual whiteboards with pens or paper and pencils, small cards with ‘be’, ‘g’, and ‘in’ on, small cards with words from the game, prepared sheet for homework

Learning Objectives

The lesson plan has the following learning objectives.

  • To recognise the critical features of words, e.g. length, common spelling patterns and words within words
  • To read on sight familiar words

Using the Reading Game

  • Teacher starts the lesson by handing out three cards showing ‘be’, ‘g’, and ‘in’ to selected pupils. Ask the pupils if they can arrange themselves in the right order so that they make a word.
  • Ask other pupils to help and then class to read the word they have made - ‘begin’.
  • Teacher explains that we can often find small words inside bigger words.
  • Teacher loads the ‘Words within words’ game on to the interactive whiteboard and explains that poor Lucy the elephant is very sad because she is stuck in the zoo! Tell pupils that we can help Lucy by finding smaller words in bigger words and if we find the smaller words correctly we’ll be able to give Lucy some presents. This will make poor Lucy happier!
  • Ask if the pupils can read the word in the box, can anyone see a smaller word in it?
  • Teacher reads the word then models clicking and dragging the letters to make the smaller word. Did everyone see this word? Teacher to model clicking and dragging a present for Lucy.
  • Continue with the game, selecting pupils for coming to the interactive whiteboard to click and drag letters to make smaller words. Choose different pupils to click and drag presents into the present box. Ensure the pupils sound out the bigger word first before clicking and dragging letters.
  • Teaching assistant could work with less able suggesting what smaller word it could be and getting the pupil to repeat it.

PLENARY

This words within words lesson plan recommends a plenary session at the end of the lesson. Teacher to hold up a card with a big word from the game. Can anyone remember what smaller word they found inside the bigger word? Using their whiteboards and pens pupils to write down the smaller word. Teaching assistant to scribe for less able. Select pupils to read out their answers. Repeat for the other words.

Literacy Homework

If a longer lesson plan is required then the lesson can be extended using the following activity or set as homework. Using the prepared sheet pupils are asked to draw the train and find the word within ‘train’ and illustrate it.

The lesson aims to achieve the following objectives.

Using the Game

  • Teacher begins the lesson by explaining to pupils that sometimes we can find words inside words if we look carefully.
  • Using the interactive whiteboard, teacher to write the word ‘barking’ and ask a pupil to come to the front of the class to use a whiteboard pen to underline the word ‘bark’.
  • Ask pupils to look at the word ‘bark’, who can see the word ‘bar’? Select another pupil to underline the word ‘bar’, but this time using a different colour.
  • Is there another word in the word ‘barking’? What about ‘king’? Underline the word ‘king’.
  • Teacher loads the ‘Words within words’ game on to the interactive whiteboard and explains that poor Lucy the elephant is very sad because she is stuck in the zoo! Tell pupils that we can help Lucy by finding smaller words in bigger words and if we find smaller words correctly we’ll be able to give Lucy some presents. This will make poor Lucy happier!
  • Begin game and ask the pupils if they can read the word in the box, can anyone see a smaller word in it?
  • Teacher to read the word then model clicking and dragging the letters to make the smaller word. Did everyone see the smaller word? Teacher models dragging a present for Lucy.
  • Explain to pupils that they will now play the game on their computers working with a partner. Pupils take turns in reading the words and using the mouse to click and drag letters.
  • Teacher and teaching assistant to ensure that the ‘Words within words’ game is ready to play on pupils’ computers or iPads.
  • Teacher and teaching assistant to move around computers / iPads giving support where necessary, encouraging turn taking and correct reading of words.
  • Teacher to explain that pupils who have finished can come and collect cards with words from the game. Using a word processing programme pupils to type a word from the game and then to type all the smaller words underneath. Repeat for all words from the game.
  • Teacher and teaching assistant to assist with loading the word processor programme.
  • Alternatively, quick pupils can play some of the other ‘Words within words’ games, these are available at Club Roy.

PLENARY

This lesson plan suggests a plenary session at the end of the lesson. Teacher holds up a card showing words from the game, can the pupils call out words from inside the bigger words.

Literacy Homework

Using the prepared sheet, pupils to underline in different colours all the other words they can see.
