Resources Required

Learning Objectives

The lesson plan has the following learning objectives.

  • To recognise, read and spell the long vowel phoneme ‘oo’ (as in moon)
  • To recognise words by common spelling patterns

Using the Spelling Game

  • Teacher starts the lesson by loading the ‘Long Vowel Phonemes - Exploring words with the ‘oo’ sound’ spelling game on to the interactive whiteboard.
  • Teacher explains to pupils that they are going to help Tom collect everything he needs at bedtime by making some words. If the words are correct they will be able to give Tom one of the things he likes before going to sleep.
  • Teacher holds up a small card showing the ‘oo’ sound and asks the class to generate some words that might have an ‘oo’ sound in the middle.
  • When several words have been given the teacher begins the game and models clicking, dragging and dropping the ‘oo’ up to the box to make a word.
  • Teacher selects different pupils to continue the game until all 16 words have been correctly completed.
  • Ensure that class sound out each word as the ‘oo’ sound is inserted.

PLENARY

This long vowel phoneme lesson plan recommends that the lesson should end with a plenary session to consolidate learning. Teacher to return the game to the start page. Teacher asks the class to use their small whiteboards and pens, or paper and pencils, and see how many of the ‘oo’ words they can remember from the game and write them on to their boards. They could work with a partner or on their own. Teaching assistant works with less able and possibly scribe words for them, encouraging them to sound out each word as teaching assistant writes. After allowing a reasonable amount of time for this activity, pupils to read out their words. Teacher to tick off words on prepared list of words from the game.

Literacy Homework

This lesson plan can be extended through the following task or alternatively, the task can be set as homework - pupils to choose three words containing the long vowel phoneme ‘oo’, and write them in list form with an accompanying illustration.
