Overview
- Read the word in the top box
- Find a small word in it
- Click and drag letters to make the small word

- Choose a present for Lucy or have another go

Context of Lesson
To find a new word within a given word, then clicking and dragging letters to make the new word
Resources Required
Interactive whiteboard, small individual whiteboards with pens or paper and pencils, small cards (A4 pdf) with 'be', 'g', and 'in' on, small cards (A4 pdf) with words from the game, prepared sheet (A4 pdf) for homework
Learning Objectives
- To recognise the critical features of words, e.g. length, common spelling patterns and words within words
- To read on sight familiar words
Using the Reading Game
- Teacher to start lesson by handing out three cards (A4 pdf) showing 'be', 'g', and 'in' to selected pupils. Ask the pupils to arrange
themselves in the right order so that they make a word.
- Ask other pupils to help and then class to read the word they have made - 'begin'.
- Teacher to explain that we can often find small words inside bigger words.
- Teacher to load 'Words within words' reading game on to the interactive whiteboard and explain that poor Lucy the elephant is
very sad because she is stuck in the zoo! Tell pupils that we can help Lucy by finding smaller words in bigger words and if
we find the smaller words correctly we'll be able to give Lucy some presents. This will make poor Lucy happier!
- Ask the pupils to read the word in the box, can anyone see a smaller word in it?
- Teacher to read the word then model clicking and dragging the letters to make the smaller word. Did everyone see the
smaller word? Teacher to model clicking and dragging a present for Lucy.
- Continue with the reading game, selecting pupils to come to the interactive whiteboard to click and drag letters to make
the smaller words. Choose different pupils to click and drag presents into the present box. Ensure the pupils sound
out the bigger word first before clicking and dragging letters.
- Teaching assistant could work with less able suggesting the smaller word and getting the pupil to repeat it.
- PLENARY: Teacher to hold up a card (A4 pdf) with a big word from the reading game. Can anyone remember the smaller word inside the bigger word? Using their whiteboards and pens pupils to write down the smaller word. Teaching assistant to scribe for less able. Select pupils to read out their answers. Repeat for other words used in the game.
Literacy Homework
Using the prepared sheet (A4 pdf) pupils to draw the train and find the word within 'train' and illustrate it.

Using the Reading Game
- Teacher to begin lesson by explaining to pupils that sometimes we can find words inside words if we look carefully.
- Using the interactive whiteboard, teacher to write the word 'barking' and ask a pupil to come to the front of the class
to use a whiteboard pen to underline the word 'bark'.
- Ask pupils to look at the word 'bark', who can see the word 'bar'? Select another pupil to underline the word 'bar', but this
time using a different colour.
- Is there another word in the word 'barking'? What about 'king'? Underline the word 'king'.
- Teacher to load 'Words within words' reading game on to the interactive whiteboard and explain that poor Lucy the elephant is

- Explain to pupils that they will now play the reading game on their computers working with a partner. Pupils to take turns in
reading the words and using the mouse to click and drag letters.
- Teacher and teaching assistant to ensure that the 'Words within words' reading game is ready to play on pupils' computers.
- Teacher and teaching assistant to move around computers giving support where necessary, encouraging turn taking and
correct reading of words.
- Teacher to explain that pupils who have finished the reading game can come and collect cards (A4 pdf) with words from the game.
Using a word processing programme pupils to type a word from the game and then to type all the smaller words underneath.
Repeat for all words from the game.
Teacher and teaching assistant to assist with loading the word processor programme.
Alternatively, quick pupils can play some of the other 'Words within words' reading games.
- PLENARY: Teacher to hold up a card (A4 pdf) showing words from the game, pupils to call out words from inside the bigger words.
Literacy Homework
Using the prepared sheet (A4 pdf), pupils to underline in different colours all the other words they can see.
