Overview
- Select words by hovering mouse over bees - word is revealed
- Look at word and sound it out
- If it rhymes with 'dash', click and drag the bee into the nest
- Watch the flower grow
- Answers are automatically marked
- Complete for all words until reading game is complete
Context of Lesson
Pupils to sound out given words and select those that rhyme with 'dash'
Resources Required
Interactive whiteboard, small individual whiteboards with pens, or paper and pencils, small cards (A4 pdf) with 'd', and 'ash' written on them, prepared worksheet (A4 pdf) for homework
Learning Objectives
- To explore and play with rhyming patterns
- To generate rhyming strings e.g. dash, cash, rash
Using the Reading Game
- Teacher to show class 'ash' card (A4 pdf), class to practice saying 'ash'.
- Explain to the class that when we add the letter 'd' to this sound it becomes the word 'dash'.
- Ask pupils to call out as many words as they can that sound like 'dash'. Explain to pupils that these words 'rhyme' with 'dash'.
- Teacher to load 'Words that rhyme with dash' reading game on to the interactive whiteboard and explain to the class that they
are going to help the bees bring words that rhyme with 'dash' to the nest. If we get the words right the flower will grow.
- Teacher to begin game and model revealing a word, sounding the word out, then if it rhymes with 'dash' clicking and dragging it
into the nest.
- Continue with the reading game selecting different pupils to come to the interactive whiteboard to reveal words, sound out, then
click and drag, or choose another bee.
- Teaching assistant to work with less able, encouraging them to sound out words correctly.
- PLENARY: Pupils to use their individual whiteboards and pens to write at least three words that they can remember from the game. Teaching assistant to scribe words for less able, or write word and ask pupil to copy it underneath. Ask pupils to hold up their work and select at random three or four different boards to read out.
Literacy Homework
On prepared worksheets (A4 pdf) ask pupils to write out six words that rhyme with 'cash'.

using the mouse and reading the words.
- Explain to pupils that when they have found all eight words that rhyme with 'dash' they must come to the teacher and collect
a small card (A4 pdf) with a picture of some 'cash' on it.
- Pupils with a 'cash' card to use a word processing programme to type as many words that rhyme with 'cash' as they can.
Pupils to take turns using the keyboard.
- Teacher and teaching assistant to move around computers ensuring that the game is being played correctly and that pupils
are sounding out words.
- Teacher and teaching assistant to help pupils load word processing programme.
- PLENARY: At the end of the lesson, revise sound 'ash' using the small card (A4 pdf). Then ask the pupils that typed words to read out one of their words. Did anyone think of a word that was not in the game?
Literacy Homework
Write some 'dash' words and illustrate them or on prepared worksheets (A4 pdf) ask pupils to write out six words that rhyme with 'cash'.
