Overview
- Read the colour words at the bottom of the reading game
- Read the colours that are shown in the box
- Click and drag words to match the colours
- Answers are automatically marked
- Click and drag a 'bedtime bit' to Tom or try again
- Repeat until game is completed
Context of Lesson
Pupils to recognise colour names and match them correctly to the colours in the box
Resources Required
Interactive whiteboard, one set of small cards (A4 pdf) , 'My favorite colour worksheet' (A4 pdf)
Learning Objectives
- To read on sight high frequency words such as colour names
- To match the colour names correctly to the coloured squares
Using the Reading Game
- Teacher to explain to class that they are going to be thinking about colours, so they will each get a card with a coloured star on it.
- Teacher and teaching assistant to give out small cards (A4 pdf).
- Teacher to load 'High Frequency Words - Colours' reading game on to the interactive whiteboard and explain to pupils that
old Tom wants to go to bed, but hasn't got all the things he needs to help him sleep.
- Teacher to explain that pupils can help Tom get all his 'bedtime bits' by matching the colour words to the colours in the box.
- Teacher to begin game by asking pupils who have a pink star card to hold it up. Can they see the word 'pink' in the game?
- Teacher to choose one of these pupils to come and click and drag the 'pink' word into the correct place, then choose another
'pink' child to click and drag a 'bedtime bit' for Tom.
Repeat for all other colours.
- At end of game give out prepared paper with 'My favorite colour is... because...' (A4 pdf).
- Teacher and teaching assistant to help pupils to complete sentence correctly, and to read it back to either teacher or teaching assistant.
- PLENARY: Ask pupils to call out the colours they have used for Tom's game. Can they remember all 11 (black is repeated twice in game)?.
Literacy Homework
Use their favorite colour to draw a picture about Tom.

- Teacher and teaching assistant to ensure that that the 'High Frequency Words - colours' reading game is ready to play on pupils' computers.
- Teacher and teaching assistant to move around computers, encouraging pupils to read the words and to control the computer mouse correctly.
- Any pair of pupils who finish the game quickly, should collect a colour card (A4 pdf) from the teacher and use a drawing program to make a picture of one of Tom's 'bedtime bits' using only the colour on the card they have been given. Teaching assistant to assist.
- PLENARY: Teacher to ask pupils to suggest any other 'bedtime bits' that Tom might like. Ask them to give a reason why he might like it.
Literacy Homework
To make a list of all the colours they can think of, and use these colours to draw Tom's 'bedtime bits'.
