Interactive Whiteboard Lesson Plan

Overview

  • Read the words given on the 'word plant'
  • Click and drag the words into the box in their correct alphabetical order
  • Answers are automatically marked
  • Repeat for all words until reading game is complete

Context of Lesson

To read and arrange given words into alphabetical order

Resources Required

Interactive whiteboard, small individual whiteboards with pens or paper and pencils, small cards (A4 pdf) showing letters 'a' to 'z', prepared strips (A4 pdf) for homework

Learning Objectives

  • To secure alphabetic letter knowledge and alphabetic order

Using the Reading Game

  • Teacher to explain to class that they will be practicing the alphabet.
  • Ask class to chant the alphabet from 'a' to 'z', repeat this a few times until most of the class are joining in (if the pupils are uncertain of this, teacher could write all these letters on the whiteboard to help).
  • Teacher to load 'Alphabetical Order: a to z' on to the interactive whiteboard and read the instructions to the class. Explain that Little Mo needs help with her special word plant because all the words are in the wrong alphabetical order.
  • Teacher to start game and ask pupils to read all the words on the 'word plant'. When this has been done, show pupils the alphabet strip along the bottom of the reading game. Explain to the pupils that they can use the alphabet strip to help them order the words correctly.
  • Teacher to ask pupils which word should come first alphabetically. Teacher to model clicking and dragging the word into the top line of the box.
  • Explain to pupils that if they go wrong they can click on the bird and and it will undo the last word they dragged.
  • Continue with the reading game, selecting pupils to come to the interactive whiteboard and choose the correct word, clicking and dragging it into the box. Encourage the whole class to participate until all 15 words have been correctly ordered.
  • Teaching assistant could sit beside less able pupils and encourage them to use the alphabet strip to look for the next word.
  • PLENARY: Teacher to hold up small alphabet cards (A4 pdf) at random and ask the pupils to use their individual whiteboards to write a word starting with the NEXT letter (so if teacher holds up a 'c', pupils will write a word starting with 'd'). Paper and pencils can be used for this exercise if individual whiteboards are not available. Whole class to chant alphabet from 'a' to 'z'.

Literacy Homework

On prepared strips (A4 pdf) of paper, ask pupils to write out as much of the alphabet as they can remember, without help.

Learning Objectives

  • Teacher to explain to class that they will be practicing the alphabet.
  • Ask class to chant the alphabet from 'a' to 'z' several times (if they are uncertain about this, teacher could write all the alphabet on the whiteboard to help).
  • Teacher to load 'Alphabetical Order: a to z' on to the interactive whiteboard and read the instructions to the class. Explain that Little Mo can't put the words on her word plant into alphabetical order, so the pupils are going to help her.
  • Teacher to start game and ask pupils to read all the words on the 'word plant'. When this has been done, show pupils the alphabet strip along the bottom of the reading game. Explain to the pupils that they can use the alphabet strip to help them order the words correctly.
  • Teacher to ask pupils which word should come first alphabetically. Teacher to model clicking and dragging the word into the top line of the box.

  • Ask class to suggest which word will be next, reminding them about alphabetical order.
  • Explain to pupils that they will now play the reading game on their computers working with a partner. Pupils to take turns in using the mouse and reading the words.
  • Teacher and teaching assistant to ensure that the 'Alphabetical Order: a to z' reading game is ready to play on pupils' computers.
  • Teacher and teaching assistant to move around computers giving support where necessary, encouraging turn taking and correct reading of words.
  • Teacher to explain that pupils who have finished the reading game can come and collect extra words (A4 pdf). Pupils to take turns using a word processing programme to type the extra words into an alphabetically ordered list.
  • Teacher and teaching assistant to assist with loading the word processor programme.
  • PLENARY: Chant the alphabet from 'a' to 'z'. Ask pupils to call out any word beginning with an 'a', then a 'b', and so on up to 'z'.

Literacy Homework

Ask pupils to write a word for each letter of the alphabet in list form.
