Interactive Whiteboard Lesson Plan

Overview

  • Look at the word 'bell'
  • Select words by hovering the mouse over the stars - word is revealed
  • If it rhymes with 'bell' click and drag it into Ryan's thought bubble
  • Watch Ryan roller skate!
  • Answers are automatically marked
  • Complete for all words until reading game is complete

Context of Lesson

Pupils to sound out given words and select those that rhyme with 'bell'

Resources Required

Interactive whiteboard, small individual whiteboards with pens, or paper and pencils, small card (A4 pdf) with 'ell' on, prepared worksheet (A4 pdf) for homework

Learning Objectives

  • To explore and play with rhyming patterns
  • To generate rhyming strings e.g. fell, sell, well etc.

Using the Reading Game

  • Teacher to begin lesson by showing the small card (A4 pdf) with 'ell' on and asking the pupils to sound it out and to say what it says.
  • Explain to pupils that we can add letters to this sound and if we add the letter 'b' it becomes the word 'bell'.
  • Ask pupils to call out words that rhyme with 'bell'.
  • Once some words have been generated teacher to load 'Words that rhyme with bell' reading game on to the interactive whiteboard and explain to class that Ryan the rhino can't sleep... he's thinking of words that rhyme with 'bell'.
  • Can they help Ryan find all the words that rhyme with 'bell'? The words are hidden in the stars.
  • Teacher to begin game and model revealing a word, sounding the word out, then if it rhymes with 'bell', clicking and dragging the word into Ryan's thought bubble. Watch Ryan roller skate.
  • Continue with the reading game selecting different pupils to come to the interactive whiteboard to reveal words and class to sound out. Does it rhyme with 'bell'? Class to decide then pupil to click and drag or choose another star.
  • Teaching assistant to work with less able using the small 'ell' sound card to help them identify the rhyming word.
  • Continue the game until all five words are found. If time allows play the game again using different pupils.
  • PLENARY: Using their individual small whiteboards and pens pupils to write four words from the game. Teaching assistant to scribe for less able, or write word and ask pupil to copy it underneath. Ask pupils to hold up their work and select at random three or four different boards to read out.

Literacy Homework

On prepared worksheets (A4 pdf) ask pupils to write out three words that rhyme with 'bell'.

Using the Reading Game

  • Teacher to explain that the class will be thinking about words that rhyme, or sound the same.
  • Teacher to say the word 'bell'. Can the class say words that rhyme with the word 'bell'?
  • Allow the class to generate as many words as they can.
  • Teacher to load 'Words that rhyme with bell' reading game on to the interactive whiteboard and explain to class that Ryan the rhino can't sleep... he's thinking of words that rhyme with 'bell'.
  • Can they help Ryan find all the words that rhyme with 'bell'? The words are hidden in the stars.
  • Teacher to begin game and model revealing a word, sounding the word out, then if it rhymes with 'bell', clicking and dragging the word into Ryan's thought bubble. Watch Ryan roller skate.
  • Explain to pupils that they will now complete the reading game on their computers working with a partner. Pupils to take turns using the mouse, the partner not using the mouse to sound out the word revealed and both to decide whether it rhymes with 'bell' or not.
  • Teacher and teaching assistant to move around computers ensuring that the game is being played correctly and that pupils are sounding out words.
  • Quick pupils to play the game again if time allows. Alternatively quick pupils to use a drawing programme to draw a picture of Ryan roller skating.
  • Teacher and teaching assistant to help pupils access drawing programme.
  • PLENARY: Taking turns around the class, ask pupils to give a word that rhymes with 'bell'. It does not matter if the same word is repeated several times.

Literacy Homework

Ask pupils to draw pictures of two words that rhyme with 'bell', alternatively use the prepared worksheet (A4 pdf) and ask pupils to write out three words that rhyme with 'bell'. Pupils to colour the stars.
