Overview
- Select words by hovering mouse over apples - word is revealed
- Look at word and sound it out
- If it rhymes with 'man', click and drag the apple into Belinda's house
- Answers are automatically marked
- Complete for all words until reading game is complete
Context of Lesson
Pupils to sound out given words and select those that rhyme with 'man'
Resources Required
Interactive whiteboard, small individual whiteboards with pens or paper and pencils, small card (A4 pdf) with picture of a man, prepared worksheet (A4 pdf) for homework
Learning Objectives
- To explore and play with rhyming patterns
- To generate rhyming strings e.g. fan, can, pan
Using the Reading Game
- Teacher to explain to the class that they will be making words that sound like... (teacher to show the man picture (A4 pdf)).
- Encourage pupils to generate some rhyming strings for 'man'.
- Once some 'man' words have been generated ask pupils to sit in a circle.
- Explain that the man picture (A4 pdf) card is going to be passed around the circle and each pupil when they receive the card is
going to say a word that sounds like 'man'. Teacher to explain that the word can be a real word or a nonsense word.
- Teacher to begin by holding up the 'man' card and saying 'man'. Allow the pupils to pass the card and generate 'man' words.
- Allow as many pupils as possible to generate 'man' words.
- Teacher to load 'Words that rhyme with man' reading game on to the interactive whiteboard and explain to the class that there
are words that rhyme with 'man' hidden in the apples. Belinda the chicken loves apples and wants us to put all the apples
that rhyme with 'man' into her house.
- Teacher to begin game and model revealing a word, encouraging the class to sound the word out, then if it rhymes
with 'man' clicking and dragging it into Belinda's house.
- Continue with the reading game selecting different pupils to come to the interactive whiteboard to reveal words, sound out, then
click and drag, or choose another apple.
- Teaching assistant to work with less able, encouraging them to sound out words correctly.
- PLENARY: Teacher to return the reading game to its start page and ask pupils to use their small individual whiteboards to write as many of the words that they can remember. Teaching assistant to help less able to write words. Pupils to read out the words they have written.
Literacy Homework
On prepared worksheets (A4 pdf) ask pupils to write out six words that rhyme with 'man'.

using the mouse and reading the words.
- Ask pupils to play through the whole reading game sounding out each word as they go (remind pupils to sound out all words,
even if they don't sound or look like 'man').
- Teacher and teaching assistant to move around computers ensuring that the game is being played correctly and that pupils
are sounding out words.
- Any pupils that complete the game quickly should collect from the teacher a list of words (A4 pdf) that rhyme with 'man'. Pupils to use
a word processing programme to type these words into list form.
- Teacher and teaching assistant to help pupils load word processing programme.
- PLENARY: Teacher to ask pupils to say all the words they can remember from the reading game. Teacher to scribe these on the board. Can anyone think of a rhyming word that was not in the game e.g. flan. bran, Dan..? To end lesson can anyone make a 'silly sentence', e.g. 'The man ran with a can on a pan to see his Nan'?
Literacy Homework
Write another 'silly sentence' and illustrate it, or on prepared worksheets (A4 pdf) ask pupils to write out six words that rhyme with 'man'.
