Overview

Context of Lesson
Pupils to read word stems and sound out to find correct word ending with double consonants 'ff' or 'ss'
Resources Required
Interactive whiteboard, small individual whiteboards with pens, or paper and pencils, small cards (A4 pdf) showing 'ff' and 'ss', list of words (A4 pdf) used in the game
Learning Objectives
- To investigate, read and spell words ending with 'ff' or 'ss'
Using the Reading Game
- Teacher to introduce lesson by showing two cards (A4 pdf) with the double consonants 'ff' and 'ss'.
- Teacher to explain that with these two sounds you only say the first letter of each sound. Whole class to practice
saying 'ff' and 'ss'.
- Teacher to load 'Double Consonants: Words that end with ff and ss' reading game on to the interactive whiteboard.
- Explain to the class that Wellington the turtle can only clean up the sea if they help him get his 'ff' and 'ss' words correct.
- Teacher to begin game and model clicking and dragging 'ff' or 'ss' to make a word. Ask pupils to sound out each newly
formed word. Does it sound correct?
- Teacher to choose a pupil to click and drag an item of rubbish into the recycling bin.
- Before starting the next group of words hand out the 'ff' and 'ss' sound cards (A4 pdf). Explain to the class that they will now sound out
the parts of the words in the box and then decide whether a 'ff' sound should end the word or a 'ss' sound. Pupils to
hold up a 'ff' or 'ss' card to let the teacher know their choice.
- Ask an individual pupil to click and drag the 'ff' or 'ss' sound up to the box. Pupil to sound out the completed word.
Does it sound correct?
- Continue playing the reading game in this way. Ask different pupils to click and drag items of rubbish into the recycling bin.
- Teaching assistant to sit with less able pupils and encourage correct sounding out of words.
- PLENARY: Pupils to use their small individual whiteboards and pens, or pencils and paper, to write a sentence using one of the 'ff' or 'ss' words from the last set of words played in the game (cliff, staff, boss, fuss). Teaching assistant to work with less able pupils to encourage independent writing. If this is too difficult TA could scribe a sentence for the pupil.
Literacy Homework
Draw the articles of rubbish that were recycled. Can you think of anymore things that can be recycled? Add them to the drawing and label all
the items of rubbish.

- Teacher to explain that when they have completed the game to come and collect a card (A4 pdf) with a 'ff' and a 'ss' word on. Pupils
to use a word processor programme to write a sentence for each word on their card.
- Teacher and teaching assistant to ensure that 'Double Consonants: Words that end with ff and ss' reading game is ready to
play on pupils' computers.
Teacher and teaching assistant to move around computers to ensure that the game is being played correctly and that the pupils
are sounding out the words they make.
- Teacher and teaching assistant to ensure word processing programme is ready to use on computers.
- PLENARY: Choose individual pupils to read out their sentences. Ask class to call out as many 'ff' words as they can think of. Then to call out as many 'ss' words as they can remember. Teacher to scribe these words on the board.
Literacy Homework
Pupils to make a list of all the 'ff' words or all the 'ss' words that they can remember from the game.
