Interactive Whiteboard Lesson Plan

Overview

  • Read the word endings
  • Click and drag 'cl' or 'cr' to make a word
  • Sound out word and check if it sounds correct
  • Answers are automatically marked
  • Click and drag an item of rubbish into the recycling bin, or have another go
  • Repeat for all sets of words

Context of Lesson

Pupils to read word stems and sound out to find correct word beginning with double consonants 'cl' and 'cr'

Resources Required

Interactive whiteboard, small cards (A4 pdf) showing 'cl' and 'cr', list of words (A4 pdf) used in the game

Learning Objectives

  • To investigate, read and spell words beginning with 'cl' or 'cr'

Using the Reading Game

  • Teacher to introduce lesson by showing two cards (A4 pdf) with the double consonants 'cl' and 'cr'. Ask pupils to say what these sounds are.
  • Teacher to explain that the 'cl' and 'cr' sounds usually come at the beginning of a word.
  • Teacher to give some examples, e.g. clown and crab.
  • Teacher to load 'Double Consonants: Words that start with cl and cr' reading game on to the interactive whiteboard. Explain to the class that Wellington the turtle can only clean up the sea if they help him get his 'cl' and 'cr' words correct.
  • Teacher to begin game and model clicking and dragging 'cl' or 'cr' for the first set of four words. Ask pupils to sound out each newly formed word. Does it sound correct?
  • Teacher to choose a pupil to click and drag an item of rubbish into the recycling bin.
  • Teacher to then select pupils to continue the game until all 20 words have been correctly completed and sounded out. Ensure that each pupil sounds out the word they have made and that they confirm it is correct.
  • Choose different pupils to click and drag rubbish into the recycling bin.
  • Teaching assistant to sit with less able pupils and encourage correct sounding out of words.
  • PLENARY: Leave up last set of words (claw, club, crop, cross) and ask pupils to think of a sentence for each word and then tell their sentence to the pupil sitting beside them. Less able pupils to tell their sentence to the teacher or teaching assistant.
  • More able to think of two sentences for each word. Teacher and teaching assistant to move around class listening to the sentences.

Literacy Homework

Pupils to make a list of the 'cl' and 'cr' words used in the reading game. Who can remember all the words?

  • Explain to pupils that they are going to finish playing the 'cl' and 'cr' reading game with a partner. Pupils to take turns using the mouse. Teacher to explain that whoever is using the mouse must sound out each word to their partner.
  • Teacher to explain that when they have completed the game to come and collect a card (A4 pdf) with a 'cl' and a 'cr' word on.
  • Pupils to use a word processor programme to write a sentence for each word on their card.
  • Teacher and teaching assistant to ensure that 'Double Consonants: Words that start with cl and cr' reading game is ready to play on pupils' computers.
  • Teacher and teaching assistant to move around computers to ensure that the game is being played correctly and that the pupils are sounding out the words they make.
  • Teacher and teaching assistant to ensure word processing programme is ready to use on computers.
  • PLENARY: Choose individual pupils to read out their sentences. Ask class to call out as many 'cl' words as they can think of. Then to call out as many 'cr' words as they can remember. Teacher to scribe these words on the board.

Literacy Homework

Draw a picture of Wellington and write some of the 'cl' and 'cr' words in the sea around him.
